Marketing Jobs and Salaries by Title: 2026 Career Paths
How much do marketing jobs pay, and which pay line should you use for your title?
Updated
Marketing jobs map to pay data only when you match the title to the right occupation line, so start with the title on your offer.
Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) median for each occupation line, and use a named staffing benchmark for titles that have no BLS line. State the source with every number you quote, then bring that number to the offer conversation with the scope you will own.

Marketing Job Titles and What Each Role Does
Match your title to an occupation line before you compare pay. The line decides which pay data you can cite and which duties you should claim in the interview.
O*NET, the occupation database from the US Department of Labor, lists brand, product marketing, marketing communications, marketing coordinator and marketing director titles under the marketing manager line.
For search roles, O*NET lists the core tasks as tracking and reporting search activity for marketing executives, optimizing digital assets for SEO, and collecting web metrics such as visits, time on site and page views per visit. Name those duties in an SEO or paid search interview.

Marketing Salaries by Job Title
Use the BLS median as the anchor for each occupation line, except entry titles that O*NET lists under a manager line. Use a named staffing benchmark for titles with no BLS line, and name that source every time you quote it.

Read the median first. The mean sits above the median for marketing managers, at $177,770 against $166,790, which points to a small group of very high earners.
Robert Half, a staffing firm, gives a much lower midpoint for the same title. Its 2027 guide labels its figures as projections built from its placements, and it puts the marketing manager midpoint at $109,000.
BLS measures employer-reported pay across all industries. Robert Half measures pay for professionals it placed. Name the source you use, and match it to your scope and metro. Do not mix a BLS median and a staffing midpoint in one number.

What a Marketing Manager Does: Scope, KPIs and Reporting Lines
Confirm the scope before you accept the title. Ask whether the role plans strategy alone or leads a team that runs the budget.
Colorado State University's business careers page says a marketing manager can be an individual contributor or a team leader who manages other marketers. Its listed duties include allocating the marketing budget, assisting with paid advertising, and defining or updating key performance indicators (KPIs).
BLS splits the work across three roles. Marketing managers estimate demand and identify markets. Advertising managers create buyer interest. Promotions managers run programs that pair advertising with purchase incentives, aimed at customers in media, in displays or at events.
In BLS terms, measurement sits with market research analysts. They measure the effectiveness of marketing programs and strategies, forecast trends and present results to management. Ask whether you own that work or hand it to an analyst.
Ask for the annual marketing budget before you accept the title. Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey, reported by Yahoo Finance, puts marketing at 7.8 percent of company revenue in 2026, up from 7.7 percent in 2025.The same survey reports that 15.3 percent of marketing budgets go to AI on average.
O*NET lists the core tasks of a marketing manager. They include evaluating budgets and return on investment, developing pricing strategies, and directing the hiring, training and evaluation of marketing staff.
Ask which KPIs the hiring manager tracks. Examples include pipeline from campaigns, cost per qualified lead, return on ad spend and organic traffic from search. Pick two you can move in your first quarter, and say how you will report them.
Reporting lines differ by company. Ask who approves the creative, who signs off on the budget, and who you present results to each month. Write the answers down, because the title alone will not tell you.
Marketing Career Paths: Coordinator to CMO
Judge each rung by scope, not by the word in the title. Use the director test on every offer before you compare the level.
KORE1, a recruiting firm, says the common ladder runs coordinator, specialist, manager, director, VP, then CMO. Senior manager and head of also appear as rungs.
The director test asks whether the role owns a function, sets its direction, and has people or significant spend under it. KORE1 advises that a director title fits when all three are true.
For the manager line, BLS describes the typical entry path as a bachelor's degree plus work experience in a related advertising, marketing, promotions or sales occupation. BLS gives no number of years, so ask the hiring manager what experience they expect.
Creative leadership takes longer to reach. BLS says most art directors have 5 or more years of work experience in another occupation before they take the title.
Spencer Stuart, an executive search firm, reports that 66 percent of Fortune 500 companies had a C-suite marketing leader in 2024. Only 40 percent of those leaders hold a title that reads simply chief marketing officer. Average CMO tenure at Fortune 500 companies was 4.3 years in 2024.
AMA's 2026 career report preview says the profile organizations are hiring is the generalist with depth in two or three domains. Build depth in two areas, such as paid search and lifecycle email, and show you can run the rest of the funnel.
Ask the hiring manager how long people usually stay in the role before a move up. Write the answer down, and compare it with the next rung's scope before you accept.
When your scope grows in the role you hold, price the move before you raise it. The ask for a raise page covers the timing, the pay data and the script.
Highest Paying Marketing Jobs
Target a management line if the top BLS median is your goal. Marketing managers have the highest median of the marketing management lines.
Among the management lines, the BLS median ranks marketing managers first, public relations managers second at $146,910, and advertising and promotions managers third at $133,660.
Among the non-management lines in the table above, art directors lead at $114,850. Web and digital interface designers follow at $104,000, then market research analysts and marketing specialists at $78,760, writers and authors at $76,910, public relations specialists at $74,750, advertising sales agents at $64,820, and graphic designers at $62,960.
Marketing managers earn about 2.1 times the median of market research analysts and marketing specialists, which is $166,790 against $78,760.
The top of the range is wider. The 90th percentile for marketing managers is $293,610. The AMA's career report preview cites BLS for the claim that the top 10 percent of marketing managers earn over $200,000 a year.
Location moves the marketing manager median. The table shows the BLS median for selected metros, with the US median for comparison.
Marketing manager median pay by metro, May 2025
| Metro area | Median annual pay |
|---|---|
| San Jose | $231,370 |
| San Francisco-Oakland | $220,480 |
| Boston-Cambridge-Newton | $213,910 |
| New York-Newark-Jersey City | $192,840 |
| Denver | $182,470 |
| Washington, DC | $181,260 |
| Seattle | $175,850 |
| Los Angeles | $171,900 |
| Chicago | $165,340 |
| Austin | $164,920 |
| Atlanta | $163,500 |
| United States | $166,790 |
Price your offer against the median for the metro where you will work, and name that metro in the conversation.
Levels.fyi, a pay data site whose data skews toward large tech employers, reports a median total compensation of $184,000 for marketing roles across 803 salaries. Total compensation includes stock and bonus, so do not compare it with BLS wages.
CMO pay figures differ widely by source. Robert Half's 2027 guide puts the CMO midpoint at $208,000. Salary sites disagree widely on CMO pay, because they measure different company sizes and count bonus and equity differently. Name the source with any CMO figure you quote.
Job Outlook for Marketing Roles
Use the 2025 to 2035 BLS projections to judge each line before you commit to it. Look at openings as well as growth, because openings show how much hiring you can compete for.
BLS Occupational Outlook, 2025 to 2035
| Occupation | Jobs in 2025 | Growth, 2025 to 2035 | Note |

| Writers and authors | 140,300 | 0 percent change | AI writing use is projected to dampen demand, but writers stay needed for online media and advertising. |
The job counts in this outlook table run higher than the OEWS job counts in the pay table above for the same occupation. Compare counts only within one source.
O*NET and BLS give different growth rates for marketing managers, because they group occupations differently. O*NET lists marketing managers as much faster than average, at 7 percent or higher. The BLS group for advertising, promotions and marketing managers projects 6 percent, which is faster than average. O*NET uses one occupation code (11-2021), and the BLS group blends two (11-2011 and 11-2021). Name the source you cite.
AMA's 2026 career report preview says senior and strategic roles are holding steady while execution-focused roles decline. It reports that influencer marketer roles grew 18 percent in 2025, and that content marketer roles fell 11 percent and SEO specialist roles fell 15 percent from 2024 to 2025. The preview does not name a data source for those counts, so treat them as signals.
Content Marketing Institute's 2026 Career and Salary Report surveyed 644 marketers. Organizations still plan to grow marketing teams in 2026, but the change is in who they hire.
Skills That Raise Marketing Pay
Build the AI and analytics skills that show up in your results, and do not price them as a guaranteed raise. Use posting data as context when you ask for pay.
Lightcast, a labor market analytics firm, found that job postings listing AI skills offer 28 percent higher salaries, nearly $18,000 more a year. The finding covers all occupations, so it is an advertised premium, not a marketing pay figure.
In marketing and PR, Lightcast reports that 8 percent of job postings require AI skills. That share grows 50 percent a year, and SEO specialists show the highest demand.
Search Engine Journal, in an analysis by Kevin Indig, reviewed 946 full-time SEO roles from SalaryGuide.com posted from December 2025 through March 2026. The median was $113,625 for jobs with AI in the title and $89,438 for jobs without, a 27 percent gap. Only 41.8 percent of the roles disclosed pay.
AMA's 2026 career report preview says the share of marketing job postings that mention AI doubled in 2025. It also says AI claimed the top spot among the skills marketers expect to need most in five years. The list below comes from a survey of 1,412 practitioners. It measures opinion, not pay.
- Adaptability
- Comfort with ambiguity
- Strategic thinking
- Discernment and decision-making
- Quality control
- Big-picture business acumen
- Taste and original thinking
- Influence and storytelling
- AI fluency
For analyst roles, BLS lists analytical and communication skills. Analysts work with statistical software and turn findings into tables, graphs and written reports. Bring one table or chart from past work to the interview.
O*NET lists the technologies named for search marketing roles, including Adobe Analytics, Google Looker Analytics, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Tag Manager, Microsoft Excel and WordPress. Name these tools in your answers, and show one result you got with each.
No published dataset prices growth, lifecycle or technical SEO skills. For those skills, use the job postings from your target employers to choose what to learn, and price your offer on results you can show.
Next step: open the marketing interview roles page to match your title to the questions you will face in each role.
Common Questions
Why is the BLS median for marketing managers so far above the Robert Half midpoint?
The two sources measure different things. BLS May 2025 wages are employer-reported and cover all industries. Robert Half's midpoint is a 2027 projection built from the professionals it placed. Before you quote either number, name the source and say what it covers. Then compare your offer with the source whose scope and metro match your job.
Is a marketing manager title the same job at a startup, an agency and a large company?
No. O*NET files brand, product marketing, marketing communications and marketing director titles under one marketing manager line, so the title alone says little about pay. KORE1, a recruiting firm, warns that a VP title can overstate scope at a small company, where the VP may have been a team of one. Ask for the team size, the budget and the reporting line before you compare two offers with the same title.
Which marketing titles have no BLS wage line, and what should you benchmark them against?
BLS publishes no separate pay line for SEO, product marketing, brand, content marketing, social media or lifecycle email roles. O*NET lists SEO Strategist, Paid Search Strategist and Social Media Specialist as alternate titles under Search Marketing Strategists, which sits in the market research and marketing specialists family. For those titles, use a named staffing benchmark such as Robert Half's 2027 guide, and state its method. Match the benchmark to your scope before you quote it.
Does the outlook favor a move into management or a specialist track?
Compare the lines, not the title. BLS projects 7 percent growth for market research analysts and marketing specialists, and 6 percent for advertising, promotions and marketing managers, both from 2025 to 2035. Both grow faster than average. Graphic designers, by contrast, are projected to decline. The outlook describes the line, not your job, so check the scope of the role in the offer before you rely on it.
How far can you rely on an AI skills pay premium when you negotiate?
Treat the premium as advertised pay, not a guaranteed raise. Lightcast's figure covers all occupations, so it says nothing specific about marketing pay. The Search Engine Journal sample is also partial, because only 41.8 percent of the SEO roles disclosed pay. Use the posted pay range to anchor your request. Then price your offer on results you can show, such as pipeline you built or cost per lead you cut.
What happens to CMOs after they leave?
Spencer Stuart's data on exiting CMOs shows where they went next. Of CMOs who left Fortune 500 companies, 65 percent were promoted within their companies or moved to similar or larger roles, and 10 percent became CEOs. Plan the path as a sequence of moves that each add scope, such as owning a budget, then a team, then a function. Track which scope each move added.
