When is AVIF to JPG the right conversion?

An AVIF to JPG converter decodes the AV1 image and saves it as a standard JPEG. Convert when the file has to work outside the browser: older photo editors, office software, print shops, marketplaces and email attachments often reject AVIF. In our sample the JPG copies were 2.2 to 4.1 times larger than the AVIF files.
The conversion runs in your browser, so it needs a browser that can decode AVIF: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or later all do. If an AVIF file fails to load here, the browser cannot decode it, and a desktop tool such as ffmpeg is the fallback.

AVIF support in desktop software is newer and uneven. Some apps need a codec extension or a recent update, and many web uploaders still reject the format. Converting to JPG is the reliable way to share the image.
How much bigger will the JPG be?
In our sample, 2.2 to 4.1 times larger at quality 80, with a median of 263% bigger for photos. Lower the quality slider to shrink the JPG, and check text and edges at full size before you go below 70.
Does AVIF to JPG keep HDR or wide colour?
No. The canvas the converter uses works in standard dynamic range, and JPEG at 8 bits per channel cannot hold HDR. HDR AVIF files are tone mapped to a normal image. Keep the AVIF original if you need the HDR version.
Can I save an AVIF image from a website as JPG?
Browsers save the format the server sent, so you get an .avif file. Convert that file here. Image CDNs pick AVIF for browsers that accept it, which is why the same image may download as JPG in one browser and AVIF in another.
Should I convert my site's AVIF images to JPG?
No. For web pages AVIF is usually the smallest format, which helps Largest Contentful Paint. Serve AVIF with a JPG fallback in a picture element, and convert to JPG only for places outside the browser.
