When does PNG to JPG make a file smaller?

A PNG to JPG converter replaces lossless compression with lossy JPEG, which usually shrinks photos, gradients and busy screenshots. In our sample, social cards dropped 59% and screenshots 41% at quality 80. The trade is some loss of detail and no transparency: transparent areas are filled with white.
PNG to JPG is the wrong move for logos, icons, diagrams and small screenshots with flat colour. JPEG blurs sharp edges and can even make those files larger, as one screenshot in our sample did (+56%). For web pages, PNG to WebP usually saves more than JPG and keeps transparency.

How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?
You can't make JPEG fully lossless, but quality 90 to 95 is visually identical for most photos. Check text, thin lines and edges at 100% zoom. If they blur, keep the PNG or use WebP.
What happens to the transparent background?
JPEG has no transparency, so the converter fills transparent pixels with white. Without that fill, many tools turn them black. If you need another background colour, flatten the image in an editor first.

Why did my JPG come out bigger than the PNG?
