Why convert AVIF to PNG instead of JPG?

An AVIF to PNG converter decodes the AVIF and stores every pixel without further loss. Pick PNG over JPG when the image has transparency, when you will edit it and save it several times, or when it holds sharp text and flat colour that JPEG blurs. In our sample the PNG files were 8 to 17 times larger than the AVIF originals.
For a photo that only needs to open in another app, AVIF to JPG gives a much smaller file. For anything going back onto a web page, keep the AVIF.

Common Questions
Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. AVIF and PNG both support an alpha channel, and the converter draws the image on a transparent canvas before saving the PNG, so transparent pixels stay transparent.
Why is the PNG ten times bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF is lossy and very efficient. PNG is lossless, so it has to store every decoded pixel, including fine noise. In our sample the median growth was about 12 times. That is normal for this conversion.
Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG step is lossless: it keeps exactly what the AVIF decoder produced. Any detail the original AVIF compression removed is already gone, so the PNG is not sharper than the AVIF.
Can I convert many AVIF files to PNG at once?
Yes, up to 100 files in one batch. Large PNG outputs use a lot of memory, so on a phone convert large photos in smaller batches.
What happens to HDR AVIF images?
The browser canvas works in standard dynamic range, so HDR AVIF images are tone mapped to an 8-bit PNG. Keep the AVIF if the HDR version matters.
My AVIF file shows an error. What can I do?
The browser could not decode it. Update the browser, or try Chrome or Firefox, which have decoded AVIF the longest. Some AVIF files use features browsers do not support, such as image sequences; convert those with a desktop tool such as ffmpeg.
