A WebP to PNG converter decodes the WebP and saves every pixel without loss. Most WebP files on the web are lossy, so the PNG copy keeps the same detail and adds no quality: it only stops further loss. In our sample the PNG files came out 6 to 11 times larger than the WebP originals.
Convert to PNG when the next tool needs it: an editor or CMS that rejects WebP, a design file that needs transparency, or an image you will edit and save several times. For a photo that only needs to open everywhere, convert WebP to JPG instead. The file is a fraction of the PNG size.

Does converting WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels in the WebP stay transparent in the PNG. JPG has no alpha channel, so if you need the transparency, choose PNG, not JPG.

Does WebP to PNG improve image quality?
No. Detail that lossy WebP compression removed cannot come back. The PNG is an exact copy of the decoded WebP, so it prevents more loss when you edit and save again, but it does not restore anything.
How do I convert WebP to PNG on a Mac without an app?
Open the file in Preview, choose File, then Export, and pick PNG. In Terminal, sips -s format png image.webp --out image.png does the same for one file, and a shell loop handles a folder.
