JPG to WebP: real file size changes
| Files | JPG | WebP | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 photos, 2400 x 1254 | 188 KB | 74 KB | -61% |
Median sizes at quality 80. Every photo in the sample got smaller, by 56% to 63%. Files already saved at low JPEG quality save less.
How much smaller is a JPG after converting to WebP?
Updated
A JPG to WebP converter decodes the JPEG and re-encodes it with WebP compression. In our sample, 2400-pixel photos shrank from a median of 188 KB to 74 KB at quality 80, a 61% saving. Google's own comparison puts lossy WebP at about 25% to 34% smaller than JPEG at equal quality, so a saving this large also means the source JPEGs were saved at high quality.
Each lossy conversion loses a little detail, so convert from your best original, not from a JPEG that was already compressed several times. The converter keeps the original if the WebP would not be smaller.

Common Questions
What WebP quality should I use for photos?
Start at 80, which saved 56% to 63% on our photos with no visible change at normal size. Use 85 to 90 for hero images that people zoom into, and check fine texture such as hair and fabric at 100%.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
A little, because both formats are lossy and the image is compressed again. At quality 80 or above the change is rarely visible. Avoid converting the same image back and forth.
Why didn't one of my JPGs get smaller?
It was probably saved at low JPEG quality already, so little is left to remove. The converter tries lower WebP quality settings and keeps the original JPG if no WebP is smaller.
Do I still need JPG fallbacks for WebP?
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all show WebP. A fallback in a picture element only matters for very old browsers or for downloads people open in older desktop apps.
Is the photo metadata kept?
No. The converter draws the pixels and saves a new file, so EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location is removed. That is usually what you want on a public website.
How do I convert JPG to WebP in bulk for WordPress or Shopify?
Convert up to 100 files here, then upload the WebP files to the media library. Both platforms accept WebP uploads. Shopify's CDN can also serve WebP automatically, so check what your theme already does before converting by hand.
