Median sizes at WebP quality 80, for still GIFs. An animated GIF becomes a still WebP of its first frame, because this converter does not write animated WebP: our 12-frame samples fell from 642 KB to 23 KB only because 11 of 12 frames were dropped.
Can a GIF become an animated WebP in the browser?

A GIF to WebP converter decodes the GIF and saves a still WebP of its first frame. This tool does not write animated WebP, so use it for still GIFs: logos, charts, social cards and old screenshots. In our sample those came out 60% to 69% smaller at quality 80.
An animated GIF keeps only its first frame, and the results table does not flag it, so check animated files before you convert. For an animated result use a desktop tool such as ffmpeg, which can write animated WebP. MDN lists WebP, AVIF and APNG as better choices than GIF for animation.

What happens to an animated GIF in GIF to WebP?
Only the first frame is saved, as a still WebP. The converter does not write animated WebP, and the results table does not warn you. Check animated GIFs before converting, and use a tool such as ffmpeg when the animation must survive.
How much smaller is a still GIF as WebP?
In our sample social cards shrank 69% and a 1440 pixel screenshot 60% at quality 80. GIF stores every pixel with a 256-colour palette and older compression, while WebP is a modern format. Gains are smaller for tiny, flat graphics.
Does GIF to WebP add colours back?
No. A GIF frame holds at most 256 colours, and the WebP copy cannot restore the colours lost when the GIF was made. Lossy WebP may also shift flat colours slightly, so compare logos and brand colours at full size before replacing files.
What if the WebP is bigger than the GIF?
The converter tries lower quality settings and, if no WebP is smaller than the original, it keeps your GIF and tells you so. Very small or very flat GIFs, such as tiny icons, can hit this because GIF compresses flat colour well.
How do I convert a folder of GIFs to WebP in bulk?
Drop up to 100 GIF files on the converter and click optimize. The results table lists each file with its before and after size, and any file whose WebP would be larger is skipped and stays a GIF. Check animated GIFs first, because only their first frame is saved.
Should I replace animated GIFs on my site with WebP?
Yes, but with an animated WebP made by a tool that writes one, not with this converter. Animated GIFs are heavy and slow Largest Contentful Paint. MDN advises WebP, AVIF or APNG for animation. This tool handles the still images.
