Median sizes at AVIF quality 80. Every file got smaller. The flat 512 pixel screenshot saved the least, because PNG already compresses flat colour well.
How much smaller is PNG to AVIF than PNG to WebP?

A PNG to AVIF converter re-encodes the image with AV1 compression and keeps the alpha channel, so transparent PNGs stay transparent. In our sample the AVIF files were 85% smaller for social cards and 70% smaller for screenshots at quality 80, against 80% and 60% for WebP on the same files.
Unlike WebP mode, AVIF mode always writes the file, so read the size column and keep the PNG when the AVIF is not smaller. The first AVIF conversion loads an encoder of about 3.5 MB. Serve AVIF in a picture element with a PNG or WebP fallback.

Common Questions
Does PNG to AVIF keep transparency?
Yes. The converter draws the PNG on a transparent canvas and AVIF stores an alpha channel, so transparent pixels stay transparent. A converted test file with a transparent background decoded with its corner pixels still fully transparent and the subject opaque.
What if the AVIF is bigger than my PNG?
AVIF mode does not skip files, so a larger result is still saved and the size column shows the growth. In our sample none of the 10 files grew, and the smallest saving was 5%. Keep the PNG for any file where the AVIF is not smaller.
Which quality should I use for graphics with text?
Start at 80, which cut our social cards by 85%. Text edges and thin lines are where lossy artefacts show first, so zoom to 100% on the text. If it looks soft or ringed, raise the slider to 90 or keep the PNG.
Do all browsers display AVIF?
MDN lists AVIF support in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, and recommends fallbacks to older formats with a picture element. Email clients, many design tools and some CMS uploaders still reject AVIF, so keep a PNG or WebP copy.
Why is the first AVIF conversion slower?
AVIF encoding runs in WebAssembly in your browser. The first time you convert to AVIF the page downloads an encoder of about 3.5 MB, shown as a status line. It stays loaded for the visit, and nothing is uploaded.
Should I replace my site's PNG files with AVIF?
For photos, banners and social cards, yes: the savings in our sample were 70% to 85%. Keep PNG for tiny icons and for files that other tools must open. Use a picture element with a fallback so older browsers still show an image.
