Is HEIC to WebP smaller than HEIC to JPG?

A HEIC to WebP converter decodes the photo and re-encodes it with WebP compression. In our sample the WebP files were 40% smaller than the HEIC originals at quality 80, against 27% smaller for JPG on the same four photos. That makes WebP the better target for photos that go on a web page, where file size drives Largest Contentful Paint.
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show WebP, but email clients, print services and older desktop apps often do not, so convert to JPG for those. As with any lossy format, convert from the original HEIC once and check faces and gradients at full size.

Why convert HEIC to WebP instead of JPG?
File size. On the same four photos at quality 80, WebP came out 40% smaller than the HEIC and JPG 27% smaller. Choose WebP for web pages and JPG for anything that must open in older software, email or print workflows.
What happens if the WebP would be larger than my HEIC?
The converter tries lower quality settings and, if no WebP is smaller than the original, it keeps your HEIC and says so in the results table. HEIC is efficient, so small or already compressed files can hit this.
Which quality should I use for HEIC to WebP?
Start at 80, which made our photos 30% to 62% smaller. Lower the slider to shrink more, and check skin tones, skies and other smooth gradients at 100%, because lossy compression shows banding there first. Use 85 or higher for hero images.
Does HEIC to WebP remove location data?
Yes. The converter saves the decoded pixels in a new file, so EXIF data such as GPS position, capture time and camera model is not copied. That is usually what you want for photos on a public site.
Can I upload the WebP files to WordPress or Shopify?
Both platforms accept WebP uploads. Shopify can also serve WebP automatically from its CDN, so check what your theme already does before converting by hand. For marketplaces, email attachments and print shops, convert to JPG instead, since many of them still reject WebP.
Why does the first HEIC file take longer to convert?
Browsers other than Safari cannot decode HEIC, so the page downloads a decoder of about 3 MB the first time you add a HEIC file. It stays loaded for the visit, and later files start straight away. Decoding and encoding run on your device.
