Median sizes. PNG stores every pixel the JPEG decoder produces, compression noise included, so the files grew 4 to 7 times. The screenshots were saved as JPG at quality 85 for this test.
Does JPG to PNG improve quality, or only make the file bigger?

A JPG to PNG converter decodes the JPEG and saves the pixels in a lossless PNG. It does not restore detail: the blocky artefacts and smeared edges that JPEG compression left behind are copied into the PNG exactly. In our sample the PNG files were 5 to 7 times larger than the JPG originals.
Convert when the next step needs PNG: a design tool or CMS that rejects JPG, a file you will edit and save several times, or an image you will cut out and give a transparent background. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts with the same solid background. For web pages, keep the JPG or convert it to WebP.

Common Questions
Does JPG to PNG restore quality lost to JPEG compression?
No. The detail JPEG removed is gone for good, and its artefacts are saved into the PNG as they are. The PNG only prevents more loss from later edits. To get a sharper image you need the original file or a re-export from the source.
Why is the PNG about six times bigger than the JPG?
JPEG is lossy and PNG is lossless, so PNG has to store every pixel including the noise. In our sample photos grew 419% to 584% and screenshots 410% to 533%. A photo in PNG form is rarely worth the size.
Can JPG to PNG give me a transparent background?
No. JPEG has no alpha channel, so the PNG keeps the solid background the JPG shows. To get transparency, remove the background in an image editor and then save as PNG. A converter alone cannot tell subject from background.
When is JPG to PNG the right choice?
Convert once before a round of editing. Every edit and save of a JPG loses a little more detail, while a PNG does not. It also helps when a tool, template or marketplace accepts PNG but rejects JPG.
Can I convert many JPG files to PNG at once?
Yes, up to 100 files per batch, and each is converted in your browser. PNG outputs from large photos use a lot of memory, so on a phone or older laptop convert big photos in smaller batches.
Should I use the PNG on my website?
Not for photos. In our sample the PNG files were about 6 times larger, which slows Largest Contentful Paint. Keep the JPG, or convert it to WebP, which cut the same photos by 56% to 63%.
