HEIC to JPG: real file size changes
| Files | HEIC | JPG | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 HEIC photos, 1280 to 4242 px wide | 1.8 MB | 1.3 MB | -27% |
Median sizes at JPG quality 80. Every photo got smaller, from 8% to 58%, so the saving depends on how hard the original HEIC was compressed. Raise the quality slider for prints and heavy editing.
How do you convert HEIC to JPG without installing anything?
Updated
A HEIC to JPG converter decodes the photo and saves it as a standard JPEG that opens in any editor, upload form, email client and print service. Safari decodes HEIC itself. In other browsers the first HEIC file loads a decoder of about 3 MB, once per visit, and the page shows a status line while it loads. In our sample the JPG copies were 27% smaller than the HEIC files at quality 80.
The converter draws the pixels into a new file, so camera details and GPS location in the EXIF data are not copied. Rotated photos come out upright. JPG is lossy, so convert from the original HEIC once. If you plan several rounds of editing, convert HEIC to PNG instead, at the cost of a much larger file.

Common Questions
Why does a HEIC photo fail in an upload form, an editor or on Windows?
HEIC uses a different codec from JPEG, and many uploaders, editors and older apps only read JPEG, PNG or WebP. Converting to JPG gives you a file that every one of them accepts, and the photo looks the same at normal size.
What quality should I use for HEIC to JPG?
Start at 80. In our sample that made the photos 8% to 58% smaller than the HEIC. Use 90 or higher if you will crop, retouch or print, and expect the file to grow quickly as you raise the slider, possibly past the size of the HEIC.
Does HEIC to JPG remove the location data?
Yes. The converter decodes the pixels and saves a new JPEG, so EXIF fields such as camera model, date and GPS position are not copied. That is useful before you publish a photo. Keep the HEIC original if you need the dates for sorting.
Why is the first HEIC conversion slower than the rest?
Most browsers other than Safari cannot decode HEIC, so the page downloads a decoder of about 3 MB the first time you add a HEIC file. It then stays loaded for the visit. Large photos still take a few seconds each, because decoding and encoding run on your device.
Will portrait photos come out sideways?
No. HEIC stores the rotation as a flag instead of turning the pixels, and the converter applies that rotation before saving, so a portrait photo is upright in the JPG. Rotated photos in our test came out the right way up too.
How do I convert many HEIC files to JPG at once?
Drop up to 100 files on the converter above, keep JPG selected, and download the results one by one or all together. On a Mac, Preview exports one file at a time, and sips -s format jpeg photo.heic --out photo.jpg handles one file in Terminal.
