Does WebP to GIF keep the animation?

Updated

A WebP to GIF converter decodes every frame of an animated WebP and rebuilds them as an animated GIF, with the same frame timing and an endless loop. It works in browsers that have the ImageDecoder API. MDN lists it for Chrome and Edge 94 or later and Firefox 133 or later, and Safari only as a preview. Elsewhere you get the first frame as a still GIF, and the page says so.

GIF is much larger than WebP: the animated samples grew 80% and the photos 235%. Use it when the destination only accepts GIF, such as some chat tools, forums and email clients. For a web page, keep the animated WebP.

Common Questions

Why did my animated WebP become a single-frame GIF?

Your browser has no ImageDecoder for it, so the converter can only read the first frame and shows the message "Only the first frame was converted". MDN lists ImageDecoder for Chrome and Edge 94+ and Firefox 133+. Try one of those browsers.

Why is the GIF so much bigger than the WebP?

Animated WebP can use lossy compression, while GIF stores every frame as a lossless image with a 256-colour palette. In our sample animated files grew a median of 80% and photos 235%, which is expected, not a fault.

Why does my GIF look grainy or show banding?

Each GIF frame can hold at most 256 colours: the GIF specification gives the colour table a 3-bit size field, which allows 2 to 256 entries. Photos and smooth gradients lose the most, so the converter reduces each frame to its best 256 colours. GIF suits flat graphics and short interface clips.

Does the GIF keep a transparent background?

Yes, but only as on or off. GIF has no partial transparency, so soft edges and shadows become hard edges. In an animated sample with a transparent background, the corner pixels stayed fully transparent and the subject stayed solid.

Is the frame timing kept?

Yes. Each frame's duration is carried over, with a floor of 20 ms per frame, and the GIF loops forever. A WebP with frames of 100, 200 and 300 ms keeps those delays, so a slow pause in the animation is still a slow pause in the GIF.

Should I use GIF for animation on a website?

Usually not. MDN advises considering WebP, AVIF or APNG for animation sequences, since GIF is far less efficient. Convert to GIF only for destinations that reject newer formats, and keep the animated WebP for your own pages.
