Median sizes. PNG stores every decoded pixel without loss, so the files grew from 3 to 13 times. The largest photo, 3992 x 2992 pixels, became a 21.5 MB PNG.

When is HEIC to PNG worth a much bigger file?

Updated

A HEIC to PNG converter decodes the photo and saves every pixel in a lossless PNG. The PNG adds no quality: HEIC is already lossy, so detail the camera discarded does not come back. What you gain is a file you can edit and save again without more loss. In our sample the PNG files were 3 to 13 times larger than the HEIC originals.

For sharing, uploading or printing, HEIC to JPG is the better pick: the same photos came out 27% smaller than the HEIC instead of 558% larger. Choose PNG for a lossless editing chain, or for software that accepts PNG but not JPG.

Common Questions

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?

The PNG step is lossless: it keeps exactly what the HEIC decoder produced, at 8 bits per channel. The HEIC itself was lossy, so the PNG is not sharper than the original. It only stops further loss when you edit and save the file again.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

HEIC compresses photos with a video codec and throws away detail the eye misses. PNG has to store every pixel. In our sample the growth ranged from 221% to 1,217%, with a median of 558%, and the biggest photo became a 21.5 MB file.

Should I choose PNG or JPG for a HEIC photo?

JPG for almost everything: in our sample it was 27% smaller than the HEIC, while PNG was 558% larger. Pick PNG when you will edit the photo through several saves, composite it in a design tool, or feed it to software that rejects JPG.

How many large HEIC photos can I convert to PNG at once?

Memory is the limit. A 12 megapixel photo is about 48 MB of raw pixels before encoding, and large batches add up. Up to 100 files are accepted, but on a phone or an older laptop convert large photos in batches of 10 or fewer.

Does the PNG keep the date and location from the HEIC?

No. The converter saves the pixels only, so EXIF data such as camera model, capture date and GPS position is not copied into the PNG. Keep the HEIC original if you need that information later.

Should I put the PNG on my website?

No. A 14 MB median will slow Largest Contentful Paint badly. For web pages convert HEIC to WebP, which was 40% smaller than the HEIC in our sample, or to JPG, and keep the PNG only as an editing master.
