How much smaller is a JPG after converting to AVIF?

A JPG to AVIF converter decodes the JPEG and re-encodes it with AV1 compression. In our sample, 2400-pixel photos shrank from a median of 187 KB to 80 KB at quality 80, a 62% saving. The same photos shrank 61% as WebP, so the two formats were almost level at this setting.
AVIF re-encodes the JPEG artefacts along with the picture, so convert from your best original when you have one. The first conversion loads an encoder of about 3.5 MB. Serve AVIF in a picture element with a JPG fallback, because email and many desktop apps still reject it.

Is JPG to AVIF smaller than JPG to WebP?
At quality 80 our photos were 62% smaller as AVIF and 61% smaller as WebP, which is a tie. Choose by compatibility: AVIF is newer, so more tools and uploaders still reject it. Compare both on your own images at the quality you plan to ship.
Does JPG to AVIF lose more quality?
Both formats are lossy, so the image is compressed a second time. At quality 80 the change is rarely visible at normal size. Check fine texture such as hair and fabric at 100%, and avoid converting the same image back and forth.
Why did my screenshots save less than my photos?
Screenshots have sharp text and flat areas, so there is less to remove than in a photo. In our sample they shrank 33% against 62% for photos. For UI screenshots, converting the original PNG to AVIF saved far more, a median of 70%.
Which browsers and apps open AVIF?
MDN lists AVIF in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. Email clients, older photo editors, print shops and many upload forms still reject it. Keep a JPG copy for those, and use a picture element on web pages.
Is the photo metadata kept?
No. The converter draws the pixels and saves a new file, so EXIF data such as camera model and GPS location is not copied. That is usually what you want on a public site, but keep the JPG original for your archive.
How do I convert JPG to AVIF in bulk for a website?
